Negative thinking rarely announces itself as “a thought.” It arrives as automatic, near-instant interpretations — sometimes called Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs) — that feel like observed fact rather than one possible reading of events. Common distortion patterns include catastrophising (jumping to the worst-case outcome), mind-reading (assuming you know what others think of you), all-or-nothing thinking (one mistake = total failure), and filtering (one piece of negative feedback erases ten pieces of positive feedback). The NLP view: these are learned strategies, run so fast and so often they feel like personality — but a strategy that runs automatically can also be interrupted and replaced.
Zara sends a project update to her manager. Three hours pass with no reply. By the afternoon she's convinced: “They hated it. I'm going to get pulled off this project.”
What actually happened: No reply after three hours.
What Zara's mind added: “They hated it” (mind-reading — no evidence of anyone's actual reaction) and “I'll get pulled off the project” (catastrophising — a huge leap from silence to a specific worst-case outcome).
The gap between the fact (no reply yet) and the story (hated, pulled off) is where the cloud lives. Manager was simply in back-to-back meetings; replies at 5pm: “Great work, one small tweak.” The thought pattern had already cost Zara an afternoon of anxious performance before any real information arrived.
Recall a stressful moment from the last week. Write the bare fact in one sentence, then the story your mind added in a second sentence, and name the distortion pattern.

Before any thought can be changed, it has to be caught while it's happening — not reconstructed afterwards. This module builds a specific, physical pattern interrupt: a deliberate action that breaks the automatic thought-to-feeling chain the instant you notice it firing, buying a few seconds of choice that didn't exist before.
Idris notices, mid-meeting, the thought “I'm going to say something stupid” forming just before he's due to speak.
Interrupt: He silently says “STOP” internally and presses his thumbnail into his palm for one second — a small, private, physical break in the automatic sequence.
Redirect: In the freed second, he asks himself one pre-chosen question: “What do I actually know, right now, about this topic?” — which pulls attention back to fact rather than fear.
The interrupt doesn't argue with the thought or suppress it — it simply breaks the automatic momentum long enough for a more useful process (like the Meta Model challenge in Module 3) to take over instead of the thought running unchecked into a full anxiety spiral.

The thought doesn't have to be declared “wrong” to lose its grip — it just has to be examined with the same precision you'd use on anyone else's vague claim.

Once a thought's distortions are surfaced, reframing offers an equally accurate, more useful way to hold the same facts. A content reframe gives the same event a different meaning; a context reframe finds a setting where the exact same reaction would actually be useful. The aim isn't forced positivity — it's finding a frame that's just as true as the negative one, but more workable.
Original thought: “I pick my own work apart constantly, it's exhausting and I never feel satisfied.”
Content reframe: “That's not a flaw — that's a high internal quality bar. The exhausting part isn't having the standard, it's applying it with no off-switch. The standard itself is why your work is good.”
Context reframe: “That exact trait — catching every flaw — is precisely what you'd want running the final check before something ships to a client. The skill to build isn't losing it, it's choosing when to switch it on.”
Both reframes keep the original fact (constant self-criticism) fully intact — they simply stop treating it as a pure defect and start treating it as a trait that's currently unmanaged, which opens up “manage it” as an option where “fix myself” felt impossible.

Beyond content, a thought has a sensory “coding” — how loud the inner voice is, how large or close a mental image feels, whether it's still or looping. Changing these submodalities changes the thought's emotional charge without needing to argue about whether it's true. The swish pattern takes this further: deliberately replacing the trigger image for an unwanted thought with a compelling image of the outcome you actually want, so the new picture starts firing automatically instead.
Trigger: the moment before raising a hand to speak in a meeting, a mental image appears — small, dim, distant — of past awkward silence after speaking up.
Step 1 — the cue picture: Identify the exact moment the unwanted image appears (just before raising a hand).
Step 2 — the desired picture: Build a large, bright, close, compelling image of speaking confidently and being heard well — with the physical feeling that goes with it.
Step 3 — the swish: See the small dim old picture, then rapidly “swish” it away as the large bright new picture bursts in to replace it, growing fast and taking over the whole field of view. Blank the screen, then repeat five times, fast, always old-to-new, never new-to-old.
Result: With repetition, the cue moment (about to speak) starts triggering the new, resourceful image automatically, because that's now the stronger, more recently reinforced association.
